Working with preschool and elementary age children usually requires someone on the other side of the computer to be your “hands” and to help facilitate the sessions. While, early intervention session can involve more parent coaching.

Many OTs dream of working from home? But is it the right choice? You will be working online from home alone. Without colleagues and little interaction with peers. While I made some great friends with my “co-workers” while I worked online, it took a lot of effort.

Also realize most online OT jobs are hourly or 1099. And cancellations may not be paid. Hours also may not be guaranteed. I was hired recently for a 10 hour a week job and never got more than 1 hours a week of work. I find this is common in online OT. With Speech, there are more kids in a school who need therapy. Just like when we work in the schools, we will go to many more schools than the SLPs.

Characteristics that make a great virtual OT:

• Years of OT experience in different settings or employers

• Quiet workspace
• Flexible schedule for makeups and meetings

Can I work as an online OT while watching my kids?

The answer is No. Running sessions is the same as being in person with a child. You can't run to the door, watch your baby or stop to make lunch for the kids.

What type of experience should I have before taking a virtual OT job?

You should have the experience in the same OT job setting as the online job is. If the job is early intervention, then have at least a year of early intervention in person experience. If the job is schools, then a few years as a school OT is best.

Look on job boards! Search for remote jobs which require licensure in the states you are licensed in.

While I loved being a virtual OT, I was never able to get to full time hours. This could change if you are hired by the school district directly or for certain guaranteed days instead of hours.
